Hemel was established in 1966 as a joint venture between Hickson, a British company, and Turkish shareholders to produce impregnation chemicals used in wood * early 1980s onwards, Hemel has directed its focus on the construction sector by providing solutions for external wood parts such as joinery, door, ceiling and pergola. In particular, Hemel put emphasis on the restoration of traditional wood architecture that is considered as historical landmark of Istanbul.
At the same time, Hemel started importing the special breather paint Hickson Décor from Holland. Over time, Hickson Décor has become the leading brand in external wood stains. In 1992, Hemel successfully entered the parquet varnish market with high-tech water-based products that are environmentally friendly. Toget ...her with solvent-based products, Hemel has a full range of parquet varnishes that are used in homes, offices, sport centres and shopping malls.
In 1999, Hickson International plc, one of Hemel's shareholders, was acquired by Arch Chemicals of the USA. As a leader in developing high technology chemicals, Arch introduced its environmentally friendly next generation impregnation material Tanalith E in 2002. In full compliance with the latest EU and US standards, Tanalith E became the market leader many countries around the world including the USA, the EU, Australia and Japan.
In 2003, Hemel introduced the natural oil-based paint Restol, its latest innovative product, for use on all wood structures and furniture in gardens and recreational areas. Besides, Hemel setup a colour mixing machine in order to deliver a comprehensive colour range of its products within 48 hours.
